展覧会概要
「人間とは何か」を描き続け、戦後の奇才と称された鴨居玲(1928-1985)。金沢美術工芸専門学校(現 金沢美術工芸大学)で宮本三郎に師事し、フランス、ブラジル、イタリアそしてスペインなど様々な国を巡るなかで「おばあさん」「酔っぱらい」などのモティーフに出会い、自身の画風を確立させていきました。自身にとって「写実」とは見えないものを描くことであるとし、人間の内面、己の理念を人物像などのモティーフを通して描き出した鴨居。本展では、自画像の画家と呼ばれた鴨居の初期から晩年までの「自画像」、スペイン滞在時に生まれた「酔っぱらい」、帰国後に新たな挑戦として取り組んだ「女性像」、信仰に対する問を表現した「教会」など、これら鴨居芸術において重要な要素であったモティーフに着目し、鴨居が描こうとした人間の心と心の関係、鴨居の芸術像を紹介します。また、『週刊読売』で連載された、陳舜臣のエッセイ『弥縫録 中国名言集』のために手掛けた挿絵原画の一部も展示します。

鴨居玲略歴
1928年石川県金沢市に生まれる。金沢美術工芸専門学校(現･金沢美術工芸大学)で宮本三郎に学ぶ。1959年から66年にかけてパリ、南米、ローマなどを巡る。1968年に日動画廊(大阪)で初の個展を開催し、翌年に昭和会展優秀賞、安井賞を受賞。再び渡欧し、1971年にスペインにアトリエを構え、マドリード、バルデペーニャス、トレドなどに住む。その後、パリとニューヨークで個展を開催し、1977年の帰国後は神戸にアトリエを構える。1984年に兵庫県文化賞を受賞。1985年、神戸の自宅で亡くなる。(享年57歳)

Exhibition Overview
An exhibition will be held to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the death of Rei Kamoi (1928-1985) (whose name is often spelt Rey Camoy/Camoi in accordance with his signature), who continued to express “What does it mean to be human?” After graduating from Kanazawa Vocational School of Arts and Crafts (present-day Kanazawa College of Art), Kamoi established his own painting style while touring various countries such as France, Brazil, Italy, and Spain. Interested in the connection between heart and heart in humans, he depicted dark aspects and weak aspects of the human heart through motifs of human figures, etc. This exhibition focuses on the motifs that were an important element in Kamoi’s production of artwork, and introduces Kamoi’s artistic image of figures, from self-portraits, drunkards, portraits of women, churches, etc. It also displays the original illustrations he was involved in for Biho-roku, Chugoku meigenshu [Well-known quotations in China], an essay by Chin Shunshin (Chen Sunchen) serialized in The Yomiuri Weekly from 1978-1980.
Rei Kamoi Profile
He was born in Kanazawa City, Ishikawa Prefecture in 1928. He studied under Miyamoto Saburo at Kanazawa Vocational School of Arts and Crafts (present-day Kanazawa College of Art). From 1959 into 1966, he spent his time overseas, and toured places such as Paris, Brazil, and Rome. He held his first solo exhibition in 1968, and the following year he won the Yasui Award, said to be the gateway to success for new Western-style painters. Crossing to Europe once more, he set up a studio in Spain, living in Madrid, Valdepeñas, and Toledo, among other places. Later, he held solo exhibitions in Paris and New York, and on his return to Japan in 1977, he set up a studio in Kobe. He died in 1985 at the age of 57.
